Dangerous items for shipping in logistics

Dangerous goods are materials or items with hazardous properties which, if not properly controlled, present a potential hazard to human health and safety, infrastructure and/or their means of transportation.

A shipper is expected to declare their items accurately prior to shipping. Failure to do so can lead to legal prosecution against the sender and detainment by customs or the authorities.

Furthermore, this can help to avoid accidents like the recent fire that destroyed the X-Press Pearl

Dangerous Goods in shipping:

  1. Miscellaneous: magnetic materials (dry ice, asbestos, and equipment containing lithium batteries)

  2. Corrosives: caustic soda, batteries, acids, mercury, alkaline and bromine

  3. Radioactive: radioactive medicines and X-ray, domestic smoke detectors, and xenon gas

  4. Toxic and Infectious: virus cultures, pathology specimens, poison, arsenic, cyanides and insecticides

  5. Oxidizing substance: fibreglass, repair kits, weed killers (sodium chlorate) bleach, peroxide, paint strippers

  6. Flammable: kerosene, gasoline, thinner, petrol, paint, diesel, alcohol, perfumery products, matches, lighter, sulphur, sodium metal, calcium carbide, naphthalene, phosphorus and metal powders.

  7. Explosives: bombs, blasting/demolition devices, firearms, live blank ammunition for firearms.

In Logistics, shipping of Dangerous goods requires an MSDS Certificate to enable the proper handling and transportation of these items

What is a MSDS?

A Material Safety Data Sheet is a safety document that is provided by a manufacturer about a particular product. This generally includes physical properties, chemical properties, instructions for safe handling, emergency control measures, etc.

The basic purpose of a Material Safety Data Sheet is to provide necessary information about the substance that is being transported to the authorized personal involved ie workers, emergency personnel etc, and its safe handling.

The contents of this document vary depending upon the nature of the substance that is being provided by the manufacturer.

The MSDS usually contains the following information but is not limited to:

  • Physical information like the boiling point of the substance

  • The toxicity

  • The safe handling procedure

  • First aid procedure

  • Reactivity of the substance

  • Storage of the substance and the safe disposal

It is vitally important to know and adhere to all the safety regulations when shipping your goods.
