EDO STATE

Edo police neutralize six kidnappers,
rescued abducted passengers.

The Edo State Police Command, on Wednesday, said its operatives have neutralized six suspected kidnappers during a gun battle.

The State Police Command spokesman, ASP Kontongs Bello, in a statement, on Wednesday, said the suspected kidnappers had intercepted an 18-seater bus traveling from Lagos to the Eastern
part of the country along the Lagos-Benin by-pass.

According to him, the kidnappers were moving the victims into the forest when they encountered the police and engaged them in a gun battle, adding that the kidnappers died from the
injuries sustained during the gun battle.

He said the deceased were believed to be part of the notorious gang terrorizing Benin/Lagos expressway and environs.

According to him, the passengers were rescued unhurt, while bush combing was ongoing to arrest other fleeing gang members, adding that one pump action gun was recovered from the
scene.

SOKOTO STATE

28 die as boat capsizes in Sokoto.

A boat carrying about 34 passengers, yesterday, capsized in Magana village, Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State killing 28 passengers.

The boat was transporting locals from neighboring villages to major towns for their daily activities.

The village head of Gidan-Magana, Mohammed Auwalu, said, yesterday, that the boat left the village with 34 people on board but 28 people died when it capsized.

He said: “It happened on Wednesday morning when the boat was trying to cross over to a nearby Badiyawa village. The boat hit a tree inside the water and it capsized with all the
passengers on the boat. Six were, however, rescued.

“The victims have since been buried according to Muslim rites. The remaining six survivors have been conveyed to the General Hospital in Shagari where they are currently receiving
treatment.”

Also confirming the accident, Director-General of Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Nasiru Ahamed, told Vanguard in Sokoto that they received the report of the boat
accident in Shagari Local Government and the agency joined forces with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to visit the area and ascertain the situation.”

Reacting to the accident, the secretary to Shagari Local Government Area, Mas’oud Shagari, said over 26 bodies were recovered from the river while the search continues for survivors
and lifeless bodies.

ANAMBRA STATE

Gunmen attack Anambra Police Divisional
Headquarters, one killed.

An attack by gunmen on Nteje divisional headquarters, in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, was on Thursday foiled by state police command.

It was learnt that the police intervention followed a distress call by the station which came under attack by a deadly gang in the early hours of Thursday.

Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng, reportedly led the operation against the attack at about 3 am. Where one of the gunmen was killed and the other gang members fled the scene.

Items recovered by the operatives included one type O6 rifle, one magazine and 53 live ammunition of 5.56mm and charms.

“The Police Operatives decisively dealt with the assailants.

“During the gun duel, one of the gunmen was neutralized and due to the superior fire of the Police operatives, the other assailants fled the scene. The station was secured and all
police operatives and arms were intact.

“The CP, while reiterating that the Command will not relent in delivering on its mandate on the protection of life and properties, commended the officers and men of the Command for
their perseverance and painstaking efforts to weed out all criminal elements in the State,” a statement by the Command said.

  4. Persons with a persistent cough or sneezing, should also stay at home until they recover.
  5. Avoid crowded spaces such as open markets, crowded supermarkets and pharmacies.
  6. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer if no water and soap is available.
