Niger:
Security operatives foil bandits’ attacks on three LGs, kill scores.

The Joint security tactical team led by the Niger State
Commissioner of Police, CP, Monday Bala Kurtas, has foiled armed bandits attacks on three local government areas of the state and neutralized scores of them.

The councils include Munyan, Shiroro and Paikoro areas
of the state.

According to the state police command in a statement
signed by the Public Relations Officer, PRO DSP Wasiu Abiodun, information was received that suspected armed bandits were sighted at Zazagha and Injita villages of Munya LGA.

“Joint security tactical teams were immediately drafted
to the area and discovered that the bandits had divided themselves into different groups, as some of the bandits had moved to Fuka and Daza villages of Munya LGA,” Abiodun said

The statement explained that the tactical teams advanced
to these areas where the hoodlums were fiercely engaged in gun battle and repelled.

It stated that the hoodlums later extended to Gwalo village,
K/Koro area of Paikoro, LGA and the joint team responded swiftly, with recovery of cattle from the bandits

“Reinforcements were sent to Mutun-Daya village, via
Gwada, Shiroro LGA upon the receipt of information that another group of bandits were sighted in the area.”

The command further disclosed that the bandits were equally
engaged in A gun duel and some of them were neutralized, while others escaped into the forest with gunshot injuries.

” Through an additional tactical reinforcement team led
by the CP from Minna to Sarkin-Pawa, Munya LGA, normalcy was restored in the areas,” he added.

BORNO STATE

Panic
in Borno IDP camp as police diffuse IED planted by Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents.

The police in Borno State have successfully defused a
bomb planted by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents at Dalori Internally Displaced Persons Camp (IDPs) in Konduga Local Government Area.

Dalori camp is located a few kilometers from Maiduguri,
along the Maiduguri-Bama road.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert
in Lake Chad, the bomb scare began at about 6:00 am when an item concealed in a sack thought to be an Improvised Explosive Device, was spotted causing the residents at the camp to abandon their shelters and flee.

He said that for about three hours, everyone including
armed police officers at the camp stood far away while waiting for the anti-bomb squad to come and verify the content of the sack which they thought contained explosives.

He added that the team of the EOD later came and discovered
that it was an explosive, planted in the camp to cause havoc.

“The IEDs were successfully detonated without causing
any casualties,” he added.

ANAMBRA STATE

Hoodlums
burn Electricity Distribution Company building, 32 vehicles in Anambra.

Suspected hoodlums have burnt the Ogidi District of Enugu
Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) in Anambra State.

The
hoodlums burnt down all the operational vehicles of the distribution power company in what was gathered as an early morning raid on the station.

Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh,
who confirmed the arson, said the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 16, 2022, at about 1.45 am by unidentified criminal elements.

According to Ezeh, about 32 utility and operational vehicles,
along with other assets and equipment within the premises were burnt by the assailants.

Ezeh lamented that efforts made to reach the Anambra
State Fire Service at the time to quickly put out the fire did not yield any positive result.

He said members of staff did what they could to salvage
the situation as they watched the office building and other assets go down in flames.

He said, “It later took the intervention of the Honorable
Commissioner for Utilities, Anambra State, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, at about 9.05 am this morning to bring the Fire Service team down to the scene of the incident.”

“The management of EEDC expressed shock over the ugly
incident, saying it happened at a time when the company had invested so much to improve its operations and transform the socio-economic landscape of the area.

“This is a big loss to EEDC and a great setback to the
efforts being made by the company to strengthen its network and improve the quality of service to its customers within Ogidi and Anambra State at large.

“We have already brought this development to the attention
of the relevant authorities and it is expected that proper investigation will be carried out and the perpetrators of this dastardly act brought to book.

“There is no way a developing economy as ours can progress
if we continue to record this kind of incident.

It was gathered that after gaining access into the office
complex by pulling down part of the wall, the criminals attacked one of the security personnel manning the office and inflicted several machete cuts on his head, leg and arm.

They also demanded his gun, while his other colleagues
ran for their lives, it was also learnt.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed
hospital.

“We thank God that no life was lost, we condemn this
unjustifiable act and pray such does not reoccur,” Ezeh said.
