From all indications, Lekki Deep Seaport in Lagos might not start cargo operations in this month of September as earlier planned as key facilities including control tower are still under construction.
Also, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is yet to provide tugboat service for the port while relevant government agencies are not fully available in the port.
A source in the port disclosed this development to PortNews over the weekend and maintained that cargo handling could not take place without control tower and tugboat.
The source was emphatic that the construction which has reached 98% would end this September while the real cargo handling operations will start in December 2022.
“The port construction will be completed this month as we have always communicated. The commencement of the operation is another kettle of fish all together as certain things must be in place.
“There will be control tower. There must be tugboat provision by the NPA. We cannot start cargo operations without all these facilities in place. Also, all agencies of government must be at the port. Although they are already taking position.
“Cargo handling should commence by December all things been equal,” said the source.
