Shippers’ Council tasks BOAN on standard barges

Under the auspices of the Barge Operators Association of Nigeria, BOAN, the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) has urged barge operators to stop using substandard barges in order to protect their investments and clients’ consignments.

Executive Secretary of the NSC, Hassan Bello, praised BOAN representatives for their contributions in maritime logistics during a meeting with them at the Council’s Head Office in Lagos. However, he challenged them to take the topic of protection and the procurement of technically sound facilities seriously for better service.

According to Bello, barge operations are here to stay in the maritime industry because they help the economy grow. BOAN, he said, must aid to the sanity of the port community, and he called for broader stakeholder participation, in which other key players in the sector meet to address topics that concern the industry.

“On the question of pricing, we have to include a number of variables when setting tariffs for barge operations,” he said. NSC is attempting to establish a pricing standard; we are not attempting to fix a price; however, we are requesting that those requirements be investigated.

Furthermore, if we proceed to accept unprofessional conduct, there will be accidents or incidents that will damage the economy.”

Mr. Edema Keliekume, President of BOAN, praised NSC for agreeing to meet with the organization’s representatives and encouraged the regulator to strike a compromise between protection and economic profits.

“In order for our service to be more attractive to customers, the cost factor must be low so that our pricing does not get high,” Keliekume said.
