BANDITRY

  • During operations on the Birnin Gwari-Kaduna road and in Igabi LGA, troops from Operation Forest Sanity killed three bandits and rescued 16 people. According to reports, the troops responded to a distress call along the Birnin Gwari-Kaduna road’s Udawa-Manini axis to engage the bandits. The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, said, after foiling the attack, troops took some victims who sustained injuries to hospitals for treatment.

SHOOTING (GUNMEN)

  • According to the Southeast leader of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MCBAN), one person has been declared missing and fifteen cows have been killed following an attack on a cattle ranch settlement in Awba-Ofemili, Awka North Council Area of Anambra State, by suspected gunmen. He said the gunmen stormed the cattle ranch hub on Sunday night, shooting sporadically into the air to scare residents away before carrying out their heinous act.

ATTACK

  • An unspecified number of special hunters from the Joint Security Task Force were killed in an airstrike in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro local government area, Niger State. The source of the helicopter that carried out the airstrike is still unknown, according to reports. The number of fatalities, including the special hunters, is unknown as investigations into the extent of the damage are ongoing.

BRIBERY

  • The Kano State Police Command arrested a 62-year-old man in Kaduna State’s Sabon Gari Local Government Area for offering a bribe of N1 million to a police officer in exchange for the release of a suspect arrested for kidnapping. The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) made the announcement on Tuesday. He claimed the man approached the officer in charge of the state anti-kidnapping squad and offered him a bribe in exchange for the kidnappers release, a 27 year old, of Danjibga Village, Tsafe LGA, Zamfara State.

FUEL SCARCITY

  • The Federal Government is meeting with midstream and downstream oil sector operators as part of efforts to develop strategic stock for Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, in key locations across the country. It stated that the national strategic stocks would aid in addressing Nigeria’s recurrent fuel scarcity, and it also announced the formation of a 14-member committee to find a long-term solution to disruptions in the supply and distribution of petroleum products.

FLOODING

  • On Tuesday, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) warned Nigerians, particularly those in cities and riverine areas, to brace themselves for more flooding. NiMet’s Director-General stated this in Abuja on the dawn of the public release of the 2023 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP).

DIPHTHERIA

  • As of 22 January, Nigeria had recorded 123 Diphtheria infections and 38 deaths across four states of the federation. According to the most recent data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Kano State had the most confirmed infections and deaths, with 100 confirmed infections and 32 deaths, followed by Yobe, which had 17 infections and three deaths. The NCDC Director General made the announcement on Monday at the Federal Ministry of Health’s ministerial briefing in Abuja. He added that Lagos State had five cases with three deaths, while Osun had one infection with no fatalities.
