The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has officially transferred the Tincan Island Water System facilities to Sandust Tincan Water Project Limited under a 16-year concession agreement valued at ₦11 billion.
What’s Happening?
The concessionaire, Sandust Tincan Water Project Limited, will spend the rest of this year rebuilding and rehabilitating the water treatment facilities. The agreement, which kicks off on September 1, 2025, aims to transform these dormant facilities into a modern, efficient water supply system.
Why Is This Important?
With this concession, vessels visiting Nigerian waters will soon have access to fresh, treated water directly from the port, reducing the reliance on external sources. This is expected to boost vessel traffic and generate substantial revenue for the government.
A Win-Win Partnership
NPA Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, emphasized the significance of this public-private partnership, which not only revives essential infrastructure but also aligns with government policies to create a favorable environment for maritime operations.
What’s Next?
Once operational, the facility will produce 100 cubic meters of water per hour, providing a reliable water source for vessels and potentially shifting the market away from black market suppliers. The concessionaire plans to engage in dialogue and collaboration with these suppliers to explore potential partnerships.
This project, funded through equity and other financial arrangements, marks a significant step toward fulfilling the NPA’s commitment to providing clean water at the ports.
