Lagos Royal Endorses Customs Service Drive for Revenue, Trade Facilitation, and Anti-Smuggling

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has received a significant boost in its efforts to improve revenue collection, trade facilitation, and anti-smuggling activities at the Apapa Port. This comes after Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Apapa Port Command, secured the backing of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu.

Building Partnerships for a Stronger Economy

Olomu’s visit to the Oba’s palace served as a strategic move to strengthen customs community relations. He emphasized the crucial role traditional institutions play in promoting and encouraging compliance with government fiscal policies.

The importance of Lagos and the Apapa Port to Nigeria’s economy was highlighted. Olomu revealed that the NCS aims to generate a total of N5.1 trillion in revenue for the 2024 fiscal year, with the Apapa area command expected to contribute a staggering N2.3 trillion.

Collaboration is Key to Success

Olomu stressed the importance of collaboration with traditional rulers in achieving the projected revenue targets and ensuring the successful implementation of government policies. He also underscored the critical need to minimize the smuggling of dangerous adulterated drugs that threaten public health and safety.

The Oba commended the efforts of the NCS and expressed his desire for stricter measures to combat the smuggling of prohibited and substandard drugs. He acknowledged the immense threat these illicit activities pose to the nation and its people. The Oba praised the collaborative efforts of the NCS and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in their fight against drug trafficking.

Royal Support and Advice

Oba Akiolu pledged his unwavering support to the NCS and its officers. He offered words of wisdom, encouraging them to invest in their future by educating their children and prioritizing their health. The visit concluded with a renewed commitment from both parties to work together in combating drug smuggling and ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

Building on Existing Relationships

This isn’t the first time Olomu has sought support from traditional rulers. He recently visited the Oba of Ijora, Oba Fatai Aromire, marking the first time a customs chief had visited the palace in thirty years. These efforts to strengthen customs community relations demonstrate the NCS’s commitment to working collaboratively for a more secure and prosperous Nigeria.pen_sparktunesharemore_vert
