As the December rush ushers in a surge in passenger traffic across Lagos waterways, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have joined forces to ensure the season remains safe and accident-free.
Both agencies have officially launched a Joint Ember Months Safety Campaign, a proactive initiative designed to curb avoidable incidents and enforce strict safety compliance throughout the festive period.
A Renewed Commitment to Safety on Lagos Waters
In a joint statement issued by their Public Affairs Units, LASWA and NIWA emphasized that the campaign is aimed at promoting safer boating practices among operators and passengers alike.
With waterways becoming increasingly busy in December, the agencies say this heightened awareness and enforcement is crucial to protecting lives and maintaining confidence in water transport as a fast and reliable travel option in Lagos.
Stricter Safety Rules for Boat Operators
Under the new directives, all commercial and private boat operators must adhere to a set of mandatory safety guidelines. These include:
- ✓ Providing and enforcing the use of certified life jackets
- ✓ Keeping an accurate passenger manifest for every trip
- ✓ Conducting routine vessel and engine checks
- ✓ Obeying strict weight limits
- ✓ Suspending all commercial trips after 7:00 p.m.
- ✓ Ensuring only certified captains operate passenger boats
Operators have also been instructed to monitor and respond swiftly to weather advisories, halting movement whenever safety alerts are issued.
Enhanced Patrols and Search-and-Rescue Readiness
To strengthen surveillance, LASWA and NIWA announced that their Joint Search and Rescue Teams, along with trained Water Guards, will intensify patrols across major routes and terminals.
This increased presence is intended to ensure full compliance and swift intervention in case of any emergencies.
Passengers Also Have a Role to Play
While the campaign places strong obligations on operators, passengers have been urged to uphold their end of the safety chain.
Commuters are advised to:
- Wear life jackets correctly
- Board only at authorized jetties
- Avoid urging captains to overspeed
- Report unsafe practices immediately to LASWA/NIWA officials
The agencies emphasized that passenger cooperation is essential to achieving a safe travel environment across all waterways.
A Season of Celebration—Without Compromise on Safety
LASWA and NIWA reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to creating a safe, reliable, and accident-free water transport system during the ember months and beyond.
With enhanced enforcement, increased patrols, and active community participation, the agencies believe Lagosians can enjoy the festive season with greater peace of mind as they travel by water.
