The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, says the Marina and Mile 2 interchanges will integrate all modes of transport in the state.
Osiyemi said this at the groundbreaking ceremony heralding the commencement of the construction of the two interchanges in Lagos on Tuesday.
Osiyemi led the Agence Francaise De Developpment (AFD) and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA) officials to the event.
He said the project would improve public commuting in the state by integrating all modes of transportation.
Osiyemi noted that the interchanges would provide seamless connectivity among rail, water and road transportation.
He, however, commended the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for initiating the project, aimed at ensuring seamless connectivity of commuters in the state.
“The project is in tandem with the T-pillar of the Τ.Η.Ε.Μ.Ε.S + development agenda, which focuses on traffic management and transportation.
“On completion, the interchange hub will facilitate seamless commuter transfers from one mode to the other.
“This project is aimed at reducing journey time and integrating our different transport modes, including land, water, and rail. This is to ensure that transportation in Lagos is in cognizance of our people,” he said.
He assured the people of Lagos State that upon completion, the project would bring ease of changing from mode to mode.
“The project is being funded with credit from the AFD and counterpart funds from the Lagos State Government,” he said.
The Country Director of AFD, Mr Xavier Muron, noted that the reason behind the funding of the interchanges and Quality Bus Corridors was to address challenges with the first and last mile of transportation trip.
Muron said that this was his experience when he first came to Lagos 33 years ago.
“We can’t wait to see the impact of these hubs, which are set to be a game changer in the transportation sector of Lagos State,” he said.
