Maritime Security: NIMASA, NPA Chiefs to Lead Discussions at PFSON Annual Conference

The Port Security Officers Forum of Nigeria (PFSON) has finalized plans to mark two decades of implementing the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code at its 2024 annual conference.

The event, which celebrates this milestone in maritime security, will feature the participation of key figures, including the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

PFSON Chairman, Mr. Adewole Gege, in a statement, described the upcoming event as a pivotal moment to reflect on achievements over the past 20 years, evaluate current challenges, and renew commitments to enhancing maritime security in Nigeria.

With the theme: “Charting the Future of Maritime Security: Two Decades of ISPS Code Implementation and Emerging Challenges in Nigeria’s Waters,” the conference is designed as a forum for exchanging knowledge and forging partnerships to strengthen security measures in Nigeria’s maritime domain.

“This year’s conference underscores the vital role maritime security plays in shaping our nation’s economic and social progress,” Gege said.

“We are privileged to host esteemed dignitaries, including the Director General of NIMASA and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, whose leadership has significantly advanced maritime safety and security in Nigeria.”

“We also welcome representatives from critical agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service, Immigration Service, Nigeria Police, NDLEA, Nigerian Navy, Port Authority Police, Marine Police, and prominent maritime associations.

“Your participation demonstrates our shared commitment to addressing the unique challenges and opportunities within the maritime sector”, he added.

The conference will commence with a keynote address from a distinguished guest speaker, setting the tone for thought-provoking presentations and a panel discussion focused on innovative strategies for tackling both current and emerging security challenges in Nigerian waters.

On the second day, members will engage in syndicate sessions designed to facilitate in-depth discussions, foster collaboration, and develop actionable solutions tailored to the realities of Nigeria’s port operations and maritime security landscape.

Mr. Gege expressed optimism about the outcomes of the conference, stating, “We anticipate impactful conversations and resolutions from this gathering. Together, we can chart a course toward a safer and more prosperous maritime future.”

This year’s conference is expected to reinforce the significance of collective efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s waters and enhancing its maritime sector.
