Ports Police Stress Electoral Violence Prevention, Road Safety at Apapa Stakeholders’ Meeting

Ports Police Highlight Security Ahead of Elections

The Ports Authority Police Western Command has emphasized the need for electoral violence prevention and strict compliance with road safety regulations during a stakeholders’ meeting in Apapa.

The engagement formed part of activities marking the Police Week 2026, bringing together key players in the maritime and transport sectors.

Call for Peaceful Electoral Conduct

Addressing participants, the Commissioner of Police, Oluwatoyin Iyabode Agbaminoja, urged stakeholders to promote peaceful conduct before, during, and after elections.

She warned against involvement in electoral offences such as:

  • Ballot box snatching
  • Voter intimidation
  • Political thuggery

According to her, such acts pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.

Maritime Stakeholders Urged to Promote Awareness

The police command called on key port stakeholders to sensitize their members against being used as tools for violence.

These include:

  • Maritime workers
  • Freight forwarders
  • Truck drivers
  • Motor boys
  • Union leaders

The initiative aims to strengthen grassroots awareness and prevent disruptions within the port environment.

Road Safety and Traffic Compliance in Focus

Beyond electoral concerns, the meeting also highlighted the importance of road safety compliance within and around port corridors.

Key safety issues addressed include:

  • Strict adherence to traffic regulations
  • Dangers of drug abuse among drivers
  • Proper use of designated truck parks

The Command stressed that improved road discipline is critical to reducing accidents and ensuring efficient port operations.

Warning Against Dangerous Practices

Particular attention was given to the unsafe habit of motor boys sleeping under trucks, a practice linked to several injuries and fatalities.

Drivers and transport operators were advised to:

  • Avoid unsafe parking habits
  • Ensure proper rest arrangements
  • Comply fully with safety regulations
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Safety and Order

Commissioner Agbaminoja reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining:

  • Public safety
  • Law and order
  • Smooth port operations

She warned that anyone involved in electoral violence, traffic violations, or other unlawful acts would face legal consequences.

The stakeholders’ meeting underscores the proactive efforts of the Ports Authority Police to ensure a safe, secure, and orderly port environment, especially as Nigeria approaches key electoral activities.

By combining electoral awareness with road safety advocacy, the Command aims to protect lives, sustain port efficiency, and uphold democratic values.
